What exactly is equine healing? Find out from student and friend of Park Lane Stables Emma Denny
Healing has been in my life for quite a while, as my horse had received regular treatments to help manage his arthritis and the improvement in his movement and general wellbeing was significant.
However, it was not until I had personally received a treatment following a long-term injury from a riding accident that I started my own journey into healing. I went into my first session with an open mind, and about halfway through felt an intense sensation in my injured hip. By the end I felt compelled to learn more about this complementary therapy. That’s when I came across the Diploma in Equine Healing and Communication run by the Healing Animals Organisation. I’m now enrolled as a student, which has allowed me to combine my passion for horses with healing.
Using this complementary therapy, the healer is able to treat the horse holistically through relaxation techniques, and can help with a range of physical, emotional and psychological conditions. It can really help a horse to build trust and develop confidence. During a session we typically observe the horse for signs of deep relaxation, and will often see their eyes soften, lips wobble, and head lower, as they relax into the treatment. We also look for signs of releasing tension and these can be as subtle as a blink of an eye and a shake, to bigger releases such as licking, chewing and yawning.
I was lucky enough to come and meet Prodney who seemed to enjoy his treatment and did plenty of releasing as I worked over his body. As a senior equine (42 years is amazing!), I paid particular attention to his mobility to help support him and by the end of the session he had thoroughly relaxed into the healing. It was so lovely to see.
The Healing Animals Organisation works hand in hand with the veterinary fraternity and other equine specialists. However, it must be noted that the vet should always be consulted initially should there be any concerns.
I’ve really enjoyed working with some beautiful horses and ponies and I’m looking forward to taking many more journeys with them.
