Prodney’s blog: We all matter. (Especially me.)
There’s definitely been something in the air since Natalie got back from the RDA Coaching Conference she attended with Park Lane coaches Jo, Peter and Toni.
I thought at first that they were all talking enthusiastically about ‘nattering’ (which wouldn’t be unusual but would be odd), and then realised it was ‘mattering’. Which makes a lot more sense, as this is Park Lane Stables where everyone matters, whatever their role and contribution.
Turns out that they were especially inspired by one of the speakers talking about the importance of making sure people and horses know that they’re really valued. I guess it’s easy to take for granted that they already know. But do they really?
Now I already know that I matter. I am from the Russian nobility after all, and my self-confidence is not a problem (well not for me, anyway, although some visitors can be a little alarmed initially when I walk over to greet them on arrival). Although I’m retired from riding activities now, participants still learn about horse grooming and welfare with my help, and I have no doubt that they feel honoured to have such a skilful teacher.
But some of the younger horses, and definitely many of the human team, can lack confidence. Maybe we all need to remember to tell them how much they matter, whatever the contribution they’re able to make.
I guess I should make sure I apply this to my team of ponies. I think I’ll start with Abella…
